The Destination Thailand Visa, explained simply

Before building a file, it's worth understanding what this visa actually covers, who it's for, and what it does not allow.

The basics

What is the DTV?

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is a long-stay Thai visa category designed for profiles that fall under neither standard tourism nor a local employment contract: remote workers, self-employed people, participants in supervised cultural or sporting activities, or spouses of Thai nationals.

In practice, it allows an extended stay in Thailand without requiring a Thai employer, while imposing precise conditions on resources, proof of activity, and the documents to provide.

Amounts, durations and precise categories change over time: we go through them with you during the diagnostic, based on the most recent information available.

Who it's for

The main groups of profiles

Remote workers and self-employed

People working remotely for an employer or clients located outside Thailand.

Participants in a supervised activity

People taking part in a training programme, a cultural or sporting internship, or a recognised programme in Thailand over an extended period.

Spouses of Thai nationals

People married to a Thai national, subject to specific supporting documents for this situation.

Other situations to assess

Since every situation is different, the eligibility diagnostic remains the best way to know precisely where you stand.

Points to watch out for

What the DTV does not allow

  • — It is not a permanent residency permit, nor a direct path to Thai nationality.
  • — It does not authorise paid employment directly with a Thai company, except in specifically regulated cases.
  • — Renewal conditions depend on the original category and should be planned well before your stay expires.

You now know what to expect.

Frequently asked questions

Going further

Does the DTV replace a standard work visa?
No. It covers different situations, in particular remote work for a foreign employer. Direct salaried employment with a Thai company usually falls under a different visa category.
Can I bring my family with a DTV?
Certain family situations are taken into account under conditions specific to each category. We look at this with you during the diagnostic.
Where can I check official information?
The reference sources remain the official Thai government websites and representations. We point you to these sources alongside our support.
Does the DTV allow me to work for a Thai company?
No, except in specifically regulated cases. The DTV is primarily intended for activity carried out for clients or an employer located outside Thailand, not salaried employment with a Thai company.
Can I change DTV category while it is still valid?
A change of situation (for example from remote worker to spouse of a Thai national) may require a new application rather than a simple amendment. We review this type of case individually during the diagnostic.
Does the DTV give access to Thai social security?
No. The DTV does not grant rights to Thai social security. Health insurance appropriate to your stay is still required, and is generally requested as part of the file.
